Some things you should keep in mind when donating to tsunami relief charities:

1) Only donate to large, well established charities. (All of the charities listed above are large, well established charities.)

2) Only donate to charities that have extensive experience with disaster relief. (All of the charities listed above have extensive experience with disaster relief. All are outstanding tsunami relief charities.)

3) Only donate to charities that spend the vast majority of their income on charitable programs. (Some charities spend too much money on fundraising and administrative expenses.) In general, the minimum acceptable level is 65% (all of the charities listed above meet the minimum 65% level), but, all things being equal, the higher the percentage the better. Charities that spend 80% or more on charitable programs are very efficient, and those that spend 90% or more are the most efficient. The last column in the table above lists these numbers. These numbers should not be the only consideration for selecting charities to donate to, but should be a very important consideration.

4) Do not donate to any “new” charities. (None of the charities listed above are new.)

5) Do not respond to e-mails, phone calls, or knocks on the door from “charities” as they are probably scams.

6) Do not click on a link to a “charity” on any website or e-mail, as you may be taken to a page that looks legitimate, but is actually a scam. Even a link that appears to take you to a well known charity may take to you a scammers page that duplicates the well known charity. The web addresses listed above are not active for this reason. Please TYPE the name of the website into the address bar.

7) Feel free to conduct your own research on any of the charities listed above before donating.

8) Donate whatever amount is right for you. No donation is too small.

9) Always pay by check or credit card -- never use cash. If you pay by check, make it payable to the name of the charity, never an individual. If you pay by credit card, only do so on the charity's website.

10) Donate to charities that have a 501(c)(3) status (in the U.S.); these charities are recognized by the government as non-profit organizations; additionally, contributions to 501(c)(3) charities are tax deductible.

11) Always donate DIRECTLY TO THE CHARITY. Do not give money to anyone claiming to "represent" the charity. Send a check (payable to the charity) to the official charity address as listed on their website, or donate via credit card on the charity's website.

12) Do not be one of the innumerable individuals who sits and does nothing when others need help. Take action. Research the charities, visit their websites, and donate directly to the ones that appeal to you!

Thank You!
