Tsunami Warning issued for Indian Ocean -- July 24, 2005

A tsunami warning has been issued for the Indian Ocean, triggered by a 7.3 earthquake that hit near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Residents of the Islands fled from their homes, but there were no early reports of casualties, fatalities or serious damage.

The quake hit at 9:12 p.m. (local time) and the epicenter was located 690 miles south of Bangkok.

The quake was felt on all of the islands of the Andaman and Nicobar chain, an archipelago consisting of 572 islands.

Updates about the warning will be made here as they become available. Please check back.

UPDATE 5:40 p.m. GMT:

Residents in the southern coastal region of Thailand are continuing to evacuate.

UPDATE 5:55 p.m. GMT:

The tsunami warning is still in place.

Reports from India are indicating that the earthquke was felt in some areas of southern India.

No reports of serious injury or fatalities from any location.

UPDATE 6:10 p.m. GMT:

From Thailand:

The tsunami warning for Thailand is still in place.

From India:

“There is nothing to worry about [here in India]," reports India's Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal.

UPDATE 6:15 p.m GMT:

From Thailand:

The tsunami warning for Thailand is still in place.

From Nicobar Islands:

"We have got reports from all inhabited islands through the police and there has been no casualties or damage," reports top administrator Ram Kapse.

UPDATE 6:20 p.m. GMT:

From Thailand:

The tsunami warning for Thailand is still in place.

From the US Geological Survey:

No reports [yet] of damage or casualties have been received...[but] this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size."

UPDATE 6:30 p.m. GMT:

From Thailand:

THE TSUANMI WARNING IS OVER

All residents may now return to their homes.

Other information:

Still NO reports of injuries, fatalities, or serious damage from any location.
